And so it’s been – Ken’s birthday. And not just one, but a couple of days filled with fun, good laugh, and good food 🙂 Here I am sharing some of it with you. Sorry but food only comes as pictures, as teleporting food through the Internet hasn’t been invented yet.
I started from the beginning, which is BALLOONS!!! 🙂 I went to a Party Depot store and felt just like a dog in the picture
The sign in the store said: “NO big bags! NO backpacks!” Needless to say that I came in wearing my backpack and holding two big bags 🙂 Balloons were put in these bags, so Ken wouldn’t see them too early 🙂
Funny thing about this one is that camera’s face recognition feature kept picking up the smiley as a human face. It would be rather interesting to have a face like this, don’t you think? 🙂
I signed all balloons of course. You can sign foil balloons with colored soft tip markers.
Next step – more balloons and FLOWERS! These originally came as a “Bouquet in a Bag” or “European Wrap“, which was rather interesting!
And, of course, a CARD!!! Now, a birthday without a card really sucks, don’t you think? Knowing my relationship with cards, you could bet all of your money that I won’t just go to a Papyrus store and buy one 🙂 No, I always ALWAYS make cards! Since I was like 4 years old.
But this time I did not want to make just a card. No, as a game addict, I decided to make a GAME which would look like a card 🙂
So, in order to read messages in the card, Ken had to look for keys hidden somewhere in the card. It took him some time to find them! 🙂 Letters on the left are made using raised painting with gold contour. On the right is the text Ken had to decipher.
Once Ken found the keys (cheat sheets), he had to find where to position them. That took him some more time 🙂 To add more interest to the task, I used interlined alternative phrases, such as “Jack DUI“, “Thanks thanks bye paint“, and so on. Simple riddle is a boring riddle! 🙂
Finally he was able to read the card! 🙂 Yay, say “hi!” to smiling happy Ken! 🙂
What’s next? Not “alien sex” as Katy Perry & Kanye West sing in their song “E.T.” 🙂 but a CAKE of course!
I decided to avoid a traditional route and turned onto the fruit highway. This cake is actually a watermelon. Yep, inside of it is a watermelon! Cool, huh? 🙂
See? Told ya! 🙂 A seedless watermelon. I got an idea from the Jennifer Garza’s website. Thank you, Jennifer! ♥ The only thing to keep in mind is that watermelon does NOT carves well using the method shown on the site, so make sure to use a really BIG watermelon, in case you need to fix any carving screwballs 🙂
As I don’t really like sticking candles into the cake itself, I carved little candle holders out of strawberries 🙂 Rose, small flowers, and circles are carved out of honey melon, leaves are carved mint jelly, cake has chocolate-coffee whipped cream with walnuts in it, and is decorated with toasted almonds. Mmm… Sorry, no Internet food teleporting yet, like I said 🙂 I can just hear you say “Bummer!” 🙂
It was the fastest-eaten cake in all of my history of cake-making 🙂 Now I am thinking about making another one out of honey melon. Of course honey melon has a hole in the middle, but we can fill that with cream or sliced berries, can’t we? 🙂
Before eating the cake we went to a lovely place called WASABI, where they were extremely nice to us and even gave us a free dessert once they knew what it is we are celebrating 🙂 So, if you love Japanese cousine, check them out!
And thus we celebrated Ken’s birthday! 🙂
